3D Indoor Reading Space

Iterative design

Jan '24 - Feb '24

I undertook a case study to learn basics of CAD Modelling using OnShape Software where I designed a private reading space for university which would accommodate one person and be placed indoors for student to work. I was inspired from the struggles of finding a private study place on campus. To challenge myself, I placed a constraint to have no additional lighting within the pod while maintaining privacy

Final Design of the Semiod

Design Process

I conducted research while gathering inspiration to investigate the design of existing pods to understand how to maintain privacy. Created multiple iterations of sketches for initial designs.

Decided to explore three basic elements (Hexagon, Sphere and Triangle) within design and finalized to use triangle. To make the design feel approachable and peaceful, added curves and rounded edges rather than sharp triangle edge. With a final design on ready on Procreate, designed the space on OnShape CAD software. To explore deeper into the project, created a 1:10 physical model using cardboard.

In the GIF, you can see the iteration of The pod designs. Started off with pointy nd sharp corners to a a smoother and curvy design. The end design consisted of a simple seating design int he corner to accomondate a table where the user can work.

This is the physical model created from cardboard

The chair was stuck to the corner with a cabin below for users to store items. The table was deisgned to move around the pod freely

The pod is high enough to accomodate an adult and able tom mvoe within the space freely

Challenges

Generating ideas from scratch is something faced by all designer. I used three different basic 2D sketch of each wall of the model. From there I chose two sketch and incorporated the third sketch to create three new sketches and did the same to resulting three sketches. This helped me to generate multiple sketches quickly. I incorporate this process in all my designs because of its efficiency to overcome designer’s block.

Learning Outcomes

  • Generate multiple sketches quickly to facilitate designing process
  • Successfully understand and learn process of 3D modelling using online software
  • Create scaled down physical model to effectively communicate the spatial features of a model

Appendix: More on spatial design

To develop the posters, I created multiple quick iterations by referencing various designers as precedents. I incorporated elements from their work into my designs, which helped clarify the vision for the final product.

This is the iterative steps I took to design the initial shape of the pod. I started off with a triangle, circle and a hexagon. I combined the triangle and circle to make one primary shape and I experimented with just circles and hexagons. I further developed the primary shape to create two more iterations and one from just circles.

I created the following layout to showcase the ideal position to maximise the efficiency of the pod while maintaining privacy for the user.

With the window of the pod facing a source of night, there is no requirement for suppplementary source of light within the pod
