Collaboration

17 Mar ‘24 - 24 Mar ‘24

My group (3 computer science Students and me as a design student) was tasked with finding a design solution for our client: UX Was Here, to tackle various challenges faced by the company in a week's duration. UX was Here (UwH) is a collaborative platform for UX enthusiasts. I as a design student took the Creative Lead of the project and overlooked prototyping of the proposed solution on Figma.

Design Process

The challenges of the company that were being tackled were: High turnover of users who join the platform but do not engage with it frequently, Less user incentive to interact with the platform, Effective onboarding of new users.

As the creative lead, I researched about reasons for high turnover on an online community platform. There were many gaps in the secondary research being based off common human behavior.

I created a survey to understand in-depth and personal user behavior. An affinity diagram of responses from over 20+ UX Professionals in a survey designed to understand the social media engagement among UX Professionals suggested the willingness to post but lack of content ideas.

After presenting my findings to the team in an affiny map (image), we converged on a solution. For effective time management, I created a Gantt chart to delegate tasks to create a slide deck while I prototyped our solution on Figma.

We created a video for our pitch that summarises our design

List of questions that were added to the survey

The following questions were added to the survey for UX professions to understand their social media usage patterns

Response from the survey

We had positive contribution to our survey. We had 11 UX professionals responding to their habits that helped us to draw conclusions.

Challenges

As a design student, I had prior knowledge about the various design research methods that comes in handy during the ideation process. Communication among the team was challenging as CS students were not aware about it. For this, I had a briefing session before working on tasks of the day so that all of us were on the same page.

After delegating the tasks, a collaborative Gantt chart came in handy to check the team progress.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding a real life client needs and goals to effectively conduct user research.
  • Learning how to effectively conduct primary and secondary research to frame a problem.
  • Work in an collaborative environment as the creative lead and use various tools for team collaboration

Appendix: More about the Solution

UX Was Here was struggling with getting people to post compelling content and promote app usage. Through our research, we framed our problem statement as:

How might we help assist UX professionals find value, in giving back to the community by providing insights, sharing resources and engaging in activities to foster learning?

We created a slidedeck for citching our solution to our client. We included all the necessary details that was needed to convince the client about our solution

UX professionals who find value in giving back to the community can benefit from narrowed topic suggestions. This eliminates the tedious process of coming up with a post idea. Providing designers with the opportunity to pick between prompted discussion topics would serve as an incentive to contribute to a learning community where they might gain the satisfaction of contributing to the learning development of newer designers.

Other solutions that we explored but did not pursue due to lack of evidence were as follows:

  1. A monthly content contribution calendar designed after GitHub calendar which would provide incentive from personal achievement
  2. A global explore page to see the UX designs trending in different parts of the world which would provide content creation ideas to post about
  3. A Live Stream Feature which would help users to create content on-the-go while working on projects
